The Collapse of Polaroid

Polaroid was once a brand that was synonymous with instant photography. This company was the defector leader in the industry for several decades until the time came when it was no longer. In fact, the word Polaroid is interchangeable with the term instant photos. The primary cause of the demise of Polaroid is due to a failure to innovate and keep up with the times.

During the company’s heyday, much effort was spent capitalizing on perfecting the techniques of instant photography with the product being a physical film photograph that could be created instantly at the time of capture. Previously, photographs had to be developed in a lab, which could be expensive, laborious, and time consuming for the consumer. Polaroid introduced a way to create tangible photographs instantly. A lack of vision on the company’s forecast of the future caused it to fail to adapt to inevitable currents of innovation.

The Polaroid company was created in 1937. The year 2000 was when the company began to seriously falter and fail. An unfortunate combination of patent violation, poor policies, and lack of vision and proper scenario planning for future technological trends contributed to the company’s ultimate demise and declaration of bankruptcy. The technological introduction and rise of digital cameras and digital photography is what ultimately did the company in (Gaudet, n.d.).

There were several reasons that Polaroid failed to innovate and adapt. The first was the failure to take advantage of the company’s own research. The company began research and development with digital camera photography technology as early as the 1960s. By the next decade, Polaroid had a 15% market share of the camera industry. Several patents for instant imaging innovations were filed. By 1989, nearly 42% of research and development budgeting by the company was earmarked for digital imaging products and then became the preeminent vendor of digital cameras by the end of the 1990s. However, Polaroid failed to capitalize on the company’s on research and development. Polaroid mistakenly forecast that consumers would still want to produce and have instant physical photographic prints from their cameras. No scenario planning was conducted to account for the possibility that consumers would want other options, such as digital media storage options or the eventual cloud storage beginning in the 2000s (Gaudet, n.d.).

The company maintained an over reliance on just one aspect of its product portfolio and did not diversify or take into account market trends. A misguided business model of adherence to analog photography and inability to innovate due to fear of business failure and risk as well as market disruptions from analog to digital photography were the primary catalysts for the company’s resulting bankruptcy (Gaudet, n.d.). Lastly, a miscalculation on the part of the management to the potential and popularity that digital camera photography held within the market at the time and future forecasts (Williams, 2022).

Summary

Regarding the utilization of scenario planning for innovative creation for future events, products, or inventions, attention needs to be carefully placed on the many things that could affect these efforts. Scenario planning also has a focus on the future and examines various explanations that could lead to different courses of actions or paths toward a specific future. Flexibility and better preparedness are key benefits that come with the execution of scenario planning to cope with risk and uncertainty as opposed to quantitative forecasting. Collaboration amongst groups of individuals, from varying levels of an organization’s hierarchy, results in a heightened degree of creativity and outside the box contemplation as opposed to analysis of raw quantitative variables (Mortlock, 2021).

For future innovation efforts, traditional forecasting would not be an ideal methodology to employ. Forecasting is designed with the assumption that various events that take place in the future are similar to current events. This is a less creative means and often does not take into account any major shifts in environments, resulting in organizational strategy and performance associated challenges. Forecasts often only present one possible future iteration, while scenarios can present several potential futures. Forecasting certainty is typically probable whereas scenario planning is plausible. Other key forecasting planning attributes are the information type is quantitative and does not factor risk and unknowns on a theoretical basis. There are not as many stakeholders engages in the planning process as compared to scenarios. The objectivity of forecasts is fact based and objective with a focus on a short term perspective (Schultz Financial Group, 2021).

Any scenario plans need to be critically aware of the social impactful impetuous that change will undoubtedly cause. For any technology, product, or service that is being developed for market inclusion to consumers should be thoroughly researched with significant scenario planning research conducted by subject matter experts to account for various impacts that could occur, whether by other technological innovations affecting the industry such as consumer preferences, governmental regulations and policies, economic effects and indicators such as recession or bull markets, safety and environmental impacts, religious and cultural implications, etc. Modern societies are different than they were over a hundred years ago. This is most apparent by the sudden shift from monarchies to representative democracies in the 20th century. Cultural sensibilities and societal norms have also changed and evolved over time. Any future innovation should have all future possibilities considered when taking all of these key factors into contemplation.

Evaluation of Educational Sociotechnical Plan

 

The researchers that conducted the qualitative research described in the journal article, Affectability In Educational Technologies, were looking into the aspect that various learning environments are affected by digital artifacts that affect student’s interest in learning as well as augmenting the quality of the instruction. They wanted to see how new technologies and learning methods could be added to academic institutions that could better serve the learners (Hayashi & Baranauskas, 2013).

The researchers implemented a One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) scheme consisting of 520 notebook computers for about 530 students and faculty that were donated to a scholarly project in Campinas, Brazil. One of the objectives of the study was to ascertain a situated methodology for how the computers were appropriated throughout the student population with most grades using a one-to-one system. However, not all students received their own laptop and had to share with others depending on the allocated distribution (Hayashi & Baranauskas, 2013).

The researchers wanted to see how the inclusion of the technology represented by the laptops in a different culture and country as well as studying any challenges or advantages presented and discovered. The results of the study presented several conclusions in cases. The first case was illustrated but the new laptops affecting the way homework assignments were carried out. Traditionally, students had to traverse to a physical location such as the library or school computer lab. The Wi-Fi enabled laptops enabled the students to conduct the research required for their assignments from within the classroom which provided significant advantages within their learning environment. The second study connect the school population into a collaborative cooperation regarding interdisciplinary activities. The third case resulted in ascertaining that the students were positively pleased with the enhanced capability that the Wi-Fi enabled laptops provided to increased mobility and usage of the technological instrument for furthering their studies. The fourth case saw an increase in volunteers from the student population regarding technical support and tutoring programs due to a lack of funding for a IT support organization within the school system (Hayashi & Baranauskas, 2013).

Overall, the study was an interesting exploration of how the introduction of technology within a different culture in an economically depressed country affects the learning outcomes within a particular learning environment upon a population of students and faculty. The affects were overwhelmingly positive and contributed to enhanced collaborative learning, more motivation to learn, pride from having the technological artifacts, and increased life lessons instilled such as responsibility, self-esteem, empath, and better social interactive skills (Hayashi & Baranauskas, 2013).

Wi-Fi and Mobile Phones Prediction

 In 1909, Nikola Tesla predicted that there would be wireless communications and individual computing devices that individuals could carry to transmit information wirelessly. The famous inventor and master of electricity envisioned a world where a “wireless system” could transmit energy wirelessly around the world (Nikola Tesla Museum, n.d.). He was obsessed with the creation of wireless technology that focused on the transmission of data without the need to traverse wiring. Tesla predicted that it would be a possibility in the future for people to transmit telephonic signals, files, audio, and video anywhere around the globe using this technology. Unfortunately, he was unable to achieve this prediction which came to mainstream fruition in the 1990s (BBC, n.d.). In 1926, during an interview, Tesla also predicted that people would communicate “instantly by simple vest-pocket equipment.” This was an envisioning of the modern smartphone, a device whose complexity far exceeds that of telephones that existed during Tesla’s time (Jones, 2019).

Wi-Fi, or wireless fidelity, was an invention that allowed radio waves to propagate between differing radio frequencies. Initially, the theoretical premise was to mitigate U.S. Navy radio transmissions from being intercepted and jammed by the Imperial Japanese Empire and Nazi Germany militaries during World War II. Radio frequency hopping technology was a precursor to Wi-Fi development (Vanstone, 2022).

Smartphones have been around since 1992 when they were first developed by IBM. The first mobile phone ever developed was made in 1983, by Motorola, with a battery life of just 30 minutes. When IBM announced their smartphone in 1992, they subsequently release the Simon Personal Communicator in 1994. This was the first touchscreen phone in existence. Email, fax, calendar, address book, scheduler, and stylus-compatible keyboards were some of the initial first features (Tocci, 2019).

Both Wi-Fi and smartphone technologies have been and continue to be crucial inventions that enable modern society to function and continue to evolve to the next technological level. Wireless communications and smartphones are critical to basic communication across long distances, important for emergency first response, keeping families closer together, and ushers in even more technological innovation. If it were not for pioneers and inventors such as Nikola Tesla, whose ideas and theories paved the way for the future invention of these technologies that modern society could not envision being without. The loss of wireless or smartphone tech is paramount to going back to the “dark ages”. It is a shame that Nikola Tesla could not live long enough to witness these wonderful inventions.
